Windows 11 is Running Slow After an Update — 6 Real Fixes
A recent Windows 11 cumulative update can pin CPU or disk at 100% for hours. Here's how to tell which cause you have, and fix it without a reinstall.

Symptoms
- CPU or Disk at 100% in Task Manager, mostly from 'System' or 'MoUsoCoreWorker'
- Fan runs hard when the machine is doing nothing
- Search, Start menu or File Explorer take 5+ seconds to respond
Likely causes
- Windows Update still finishing background component-store work
- Superfetch/SysMain rebuilding its index after an update
- A driver — usually Intel/AMD graphics or an old storage controller — not compatible with the new build
- Search Indexer re-indexing your entire OneDrive
Step-by-step fix

Give the update 30 minutes on mains power
Some post-install work only runs when the machine is plugged in and idle. Leave it alone for half an hour before troubleshooting further — you'd be surprised how often this is the whole answer.

Check Task Manager → Processes → sort by CPU
If 'MoUsoCoreWorker.exe' or 'TiWorker.exe' is high, update is still working. If 'SearchIndexer.exe' is high, skip to step 5. If it's 'System' with high Disk, it's usually a driver — step 4.

Roll back a bad update via Settings
Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates. Remove the most recent one, reboot, and see if the machine settles. You can pause updates for 7 days while you decide what to do.

Reinstall the graphics driver clean
Download the latest from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA directly (not Windows Update). Use their installer's 'Clean install' option — this fixes the vast majority of post-update slowness on laptops from 2020 onwards.

Rebuild the Search index
Settings → Privacy & Security → Searching Windows → Advanced Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild. On a machine with lots of OneDrive files, exclude that folder unless you actively search it.

In-place upgrade as a last resort
If the machine is still slow, download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft, mount it, run setup.exe from inside Windows, choose 'Keep personal files and apps'. This repairs the OS without touching your data.
Watch out for
- Don't run generic 'PC cleaner' or 'registry cleaner' tools. They cause more slowness than they cure and often bundle unwanted extras.

How long is too long to wait after an update?▾
On a modern SSD, more than an hour of high CPU without any user activity is not normal. On a mechanical hard drive, up to 2 hours can be legitimate — but that's your sign it's time for an SSD.
Can I stop Windows Update from doing this again?▾
You can pause updates for up to 5 weeks in Settings, but you can't safely block security patches long-term. The better answer is to check that your drivers come from the manufacturer, not Windows Update — that's where 80% of update pain comes from.
