Check what the icon is actually telling you
Click the cloud icon in the system tray. A blue cloud means synced but not downloaded locally. A green tick means synced and stored on this machine. A red cross means sync has stopped — that is a real fault. A permanent circular arrow that never completes means something is stuck in the queue.

Verify against the web, not the folder
Open the OneDrive site in a browser and look for the file there. This is the only proof that matters. Your local folder showing the file tells you nothing about whether it reached Microsoft. Do this before assuming anything is backed up.

Watch out for
- Never delete files from the OneDrive folder to 'force a re-sync'. If the client is signed in, that deletion propagates to the cloud and to everyone sharing the folder.
- Files On-Demand means a file you can see may not exist on this machine. Before wiping a laptop, right-click the OneDrive folder and choose 'Always keep on this device', then wait for the green ticks.

Not on its own. It is synchronisation, which means a deletion or a ransomware encryption is copied to the cloud too.
